Greatest Beatdowns in History
![]() |
The Texas Ranger’s 30-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles set the sports world abuzz given that such a beating hadn’t been administered in baseball in over 100 years. For more about that game itself, there is the ESPN recap and ESPN Research Inside the Numbers. ESPN Page 2’s David Schoenfield compiled a list entitled The greatest beat downs in history which has 100 mostly sports blowouts according to him where he rates the Texas vs. Orioles game as number 8. |

Perhaps the beatdown played a role in the Twins’ 4 game sweep of the O’s this week.
Or maybe the O’s just suck this year.
(Most of the O’s fans I talked with picked the latter.)

Just read the linked article. The only one with which I’d quibble was:
9. Billie Jean King over Bobby Riggs.
Not to belittle King’s accomplishment, but Riggs was already a 55-year-old has-been. And, while he lost in straight sets (6–4, 6–3, 6–3), those aren’t really historic beatdown numbers.
And the saddest? 43. Reagan versus Mondale, 1984, where the US chooses make-believe la-la land over reality.
