Kitty Hawk Ceiling Fan

Filed under: Air Vehicles, Light & Illuminated Objects, Links, Other Furnishings — roclar @ 5:50 pm
Kitty Hawk Ceiling Fan by Emerson As a followup to the War Planes Collection we have the Kitty Hawk ceiling fan from Emerson. Rather then emulate the nose and propeller of a plane, Emerson has chosen to emulate the bi-wing design of the Wright Brothers original plane. Besides the fancy blade design, a 52″ blade span and a “Deluxe Emerson K55XL motor”, the Kitty Hawk has most of the normal fan features like three speeds, reversible direction and a light fixture. You can get the Kitty Hawk ceiling fan in a maple finish from Hansen Wholesale for $638 or you can get cherry wings from CeilingFansontheWeb.com for $679.

Supermarine Spitfire Mk26b Kit

Filed under: Air Vehicles, Links — roclar @ 5:50 pm
Supermarine Spitfire Mk26B Kit Moderately wealthy individuals who want to experience flying a World War II era propeller aircraft now have a solution with the Supermarine Spitfire Mk26b Kit. This kit plane is a 90% scale model of the legendary Spitfire and is approved for flying all over the globe. The kit plane is powered by a GM Isuzu V6 engine which is sold separately in either a naturally aspirated model for $42,530 or a supercharged version can be had for $50,185. In either case, the crating and handling or the engine costs $664. The Mk 26 Spitfire Fast Build kit costs $126,088 where the Mk 26b kit is priced at $144,177 with crating and handling ranging from $1,701 to $2,268 depending on the model and if you pay for wings to be pre-assembled at the factory. Before the kit reaches the consumer, the factory has already invest 700 hours in the construction time and consumer assembly time is estimated at 1200 hours depending on the assemblers skill level and if they have all of the necessary tools.

WarPlanes Fan Collection

Filed under: Air Vehicles, Links, Other Furnishings — roclar @ 8:00 am
WarPlanes Fan Collection The Craftmade WarPlanes Collection are constructed to look like the rotors of old fighter planes. At present, the collection contains three different models. The first is modeled after a P-40 Tiger Shark and has three black blades and has camouflage, red and white coloring. The second is Glamorous Glen which was Chuck Yeager’s P-51D and features four black blades, a silver body with yellow and red accents. The third and final fan is modeled after the Miss America racing P-51D and has four white blades and is painted in red, white and blue. All three fans are lit by a single A-15 light bulb which is not included. You can get the WarPlanes collection from Farrey’s for $180 for any of the three fans.

Darth Vader Balloon

Filed under: Air Vehicles, Links, Star Wars — roclar @ 8:00 am
Darth Vader Balloon Here we have a fully licensed by Lucas Film Ltd. hot air balloon of the head of Darth Vader. The balloon measures 86′ tall x 69′ wide and 78′ deep, can hold an estimated 106,000 cubic feet of air and weighs an estimated 640 pounds. It would be rather interesting to look up in the sky and see Vader’s head floating by. This reminds me of the floating head from Zardoz even though the altitude is wrong they both float albeit at different altitudes and have fire.

Sonic Boom, Sound Barrier, and Condensation Clouds Gallary

Filed under: Air Vehicles, Links — roclar @ 7:55 am
Rockwell B-1B going super sonic As an air vehicle reaches the speed of sound, an unusual cloud might form behind it. The leading theory that describes this cloud formation is described by the Prandtl-Glauert Singularity though there is still some debate. The science and math behind the cloud is interesting, but I find the pictures more my speed this days. This gallary contains pictures and even a few movies of planes in transonic flight with the cloud around them allowing you to “see” a sonic boom. The Wired Blog Network has a post showing the new F-22 gathering clouds (digg Referer) in a similar fashion.

Abandoned & Little-Known Airfields

Filed under: Air Vehicles, Links, William & Mary — roclar @ 8:00 am
William and Mary Airport Flight Map Abandoned & Little-Known Airfields is a site that covers information on 1,368 airfields across the United States that have vanished or been abandoned. Of particular note for me are the abandoned airports near me in the Virginia Hampton area. At one point, Williamsburg had two operational airports, Williamsburg Airport / Scott Field which opened in 1931 and closed some time in 1952 and College Airport / William & Mary Airport / Central Airport which also opened in 1931 and stayed open until 1962. The site also noted that the “College of William & Mary was the first college in America to offer flying lessons in its regular course catalog.” The Williamsburg area still has an active albeit small airport, the Williamsburg Jamestown Airport (JGG) which opened in 1970, but I have only been their to eat at the restaurant on site, Charly’s Airport Restaurant.

Hot Air Balloon Pictures

Filed under: Air Vehicles, Links — roclar @ 9:04 pm
Creamland Hot Air Balloon I saw these hot air balloon pictures on Fark this morning including Airabelle the Creamland Cow pictures to the left. I was reminded of the yearly hot air balloon festival that happens near my parent’s place, dubbed this year Pontiac-GMC Freedom Weekend Aloft. I also managed to find pictures from the festival in 2005.

Sacramento Plane Crash 2006/02/13

Filed under: Air Vehicles, Destruction, Links — roclar @ 3:00 pm
When Planes Fall from the Sky Living within 10 miles of a small airport (as I am sure most of us do at this point), this certainly does cause one to think just a little bit. On Monday, a two-seat Glasair II crashed into a house in Sacramento, CA while performing stunts at low altitude (below the FAA required 1000 feet when over buildings).
