Two iPods Purchased from Target Have Rocks Inside

Filed under: Apple Stuff — roclar @ 6:00 pm
Target logo with rocks Here is a somewhat curious story of a girl who received a wrapped iPod box filled with rocks. When the family went to return the iPod at the Target where it was purchased, Target refused to offer them anything more then store credit since they didn’t have another unit in stock. They then went to the nearest Target twenty miles away to get another iPod which they opened in the store after they bought it to reveal more rocks. I still find the story somewhat unbelievable though it can be easily explained by theft at the distribution center that both store presumably share. It also points out the problem of using store credit cards and gift cards as opposed to using a credit card since a third party credit card would allow you to dispute the charge until the mater is resolved. Whatever. The biggest reason I am linking this is for the PUNishment and other rock quips in the various comment threads.

Couple of Mac Tips

Filed under: Apple Stuff, Links — roclar @ 7:45 am
Mac OS Logo First we have an article entitled Mixed Computing: Stop Thumbs.db and .DS_Store files from Polluting Network Shares on UNEASYSilence. The article goes through the steps to turn off thumbnail creation in Windows to prevent it from creating Thumbs.db files and also to prevent Mac OS X from creating .DS_Store file creation at least on network shares. An Apple Knowledge base article further discusses this procedure and its possible ramifications. It sure would be nice not to have to see these files, but I am not sure its worth the trouble.

21 Years of Mac OS in Screenshots

Filed under: Apple Stuff, Links — roclar @ 7:55 am
Mac OS Logo Its finally time for the Mac OS version of the Windows History in Screenshots. Being a relative new comer to the Mac OS having only used a Mac since 9.2.1 and all of the releases of Mac OS X, it is interesting to see all the iterations of the “classic” Mac OS that I missed throughout the years. This screenshot gallary includes a bit of history about the release captured in the image. It was compiled by John Wells who while still a high school student has been using Macs for three years longer then me.

Wii Loop Machine

Filed under: Apple Stuff, Computer Related, Games & Related Links, Links — roclar @ 9:08 pm
Wii Loop Machine After Nintend released the Wii, the first I heard of using a Wiimote on a Mac was DarwiinRemote. That seemed interesting, but I couldn’t think of a good use for it not to mention even the author has in big letters that the freeware is unstable and experimental. The next evolution of course was to meld DarwiinRemote with Mac Saber to create WiiSaber. The Amazing Rolo has now taken the concept one step further and turned the Wiimote + Mac combo into the Wii Loop Machine. He uses the Wiimote to wirelessly sync, control, and manipulate loops. The whole Wiimote + Mac combo still seems pretty flakey. In the roughly two minutes I tried, I couldn’t get it to function on my iMac, though Parallels was probably getting in the way. I was able to get the Loop Machine working on a Mac Book Pro and quickly learned why I am consumer of tunes rather then a producer. :P The Wiimote also insisted on vibrating the whole time I was using the software which The Amazing Rolo mentioned would be fixed in the 1.1 version of the software. If nothing else, watching him use the software in the video in the link below and pictured to the left I found to be entertaining.

Bluetooth Proximity Detection on OS X

Filed under: Apple Stuff, Computer Related, Links — roclar @ 12:05 pm
Bluetooth Logo Having a keyboard shortcut is an ok way to activate the locking screensaver, but it still requires some thinking and execution allowing room for human error. Jesse David Hollington from The Technocrat has written up instructions on how to use Proximity and Applescript to lock and unlock a Mac using a Bluetooth phone. Using his instructions and a few pointers from the digg thread, I was able to get this working without much difficulty. There are still a few concerns such as general Bluetooth security, the range of Bluetooth causing my machine to almost never be locked, etc. but at least the keyboard shortcut still works and when locked with the shortcut, it doesn’t appear to unlock with the phone in proximity.

Guide to OS X Browsers

Filed under: Apple Stuff, Computer Related, Links — roclar @ 9:26 pm
Opera Wallpaper One of the biggest weaknesses that Mac OS X has had throughout the years is a solid, feature rich browser. When I started using Mac OS X back in the 10.0 days, I would look for new browsers every couple of months or so. This so-called guide to the current state of browsing on OS X by Brisbane Creative does point out some of the flaws and benefits to the current browser offerings. I don’t think they did as good of an overall comparison as point out how the browsers succeeded and/or failed to meet their needs. Still its a good list of the current browsers out there. As the image to the left indicates, my last browser search about a year ago had me switch exclusively to Opera and it has worked very well for me.

X-MasTree: A Christmas Tree for Your Mac

Filed under: Apple Stuff, Light & Illuminated Objects, Links — roclar @ 7:50 am
X-MasTree and the original Christi's Tree Based on Christi’s Tree (which apparently started before Apple switched to PowerPC chips), X-MasTree is a relatively simple Mac OS X app for putting a lighted tree on your desktop. You can pick from a variety of tree colors and turn on or off a variety of different lights and ornaments as well as a days until Christmas counter (which can set the date of the holiday to be 12/24, 12/25 or 1/7 depending on how you roll). The screenshot to the left has X-Mas Tree to the left and Christi’s Tree to the right and I have a local mirror of X-Mas Tree 1.4 should it prove useful.

SwitchEasy RunAway

Filed under: Apple Stuff, Links, Sports & Related Gear — roclar @ 8:00 am
Switch Easys Run Away When Apple announced the Nike + iPod product, I thought it was a neat idea but that it was a little odd to be inserting a chip into the heal of a Nike shoe. Plus, all of the Nike+ shoes are rather expensive ranging from $85 to $130. Enter the RunAway which hooks to the laces of any shoe while holding the iPod Sport Kit sensor. The Run away allows for more convenient access to the sensor which makes turning it off to conserve battery power easier and also contains a convenient method of storing the iPod receiver when not in use. The RunAway AnyShoe adapter will be available mid-November in six colors: white, black, red, orange, pastel blue and pink for $8.

ToasterClone

Filed under: Apple Stuff, Computer Related, Links — roclar @ 7:55 am
Flying Toasters Even though I was more partial to Johnny Castaway back in the day, I am sure ever long time computer person has at least seen if not run on their own machine the Flying Toasters screensaver. Originally released by Berkeley Systems for the Macintosh back in 1989 in the popular screensaver software product After Dark, the screensaver was later ported over to Windows. Since then the toasters have been all over the place, though I had not seen them for a while. Since the last time I ran Linux and Xwindows, they have been incorporated into JWZs venerable XScreenSaver. The flying toasters are also available as a freeware screensaver, ToasterClone for Mac OS X and Windows at the link below.

iPod 5th Anniversary

Filed under: Apple Stuff, Links — roclar @ 8:00 am
1st Generation iPod The iPod celebrated its 5th anniversary on the 23rd and like the digital lemming I am, I cannot stop myself from at least mentioning it. Its almost more noteworthy how the varios sites recognized the passing of the event. Engadget had a brief article with a chart of the progression of the iPod line. Gizmodo had an article listing ten reasons why the writer disliked the iPod. Slashdot had an post mentioning anniversary number five and then DVD Jon and his attempts to muddle with Apple’s Fairplay DRM. Me I am rather ambivalent seeing as I sold my first gen. iPod long ago when I realized I spend most of my time in front of the computer anyway thus subverting the need for a portable player for the most part, though I do still own a first gen. iPod Shuffle. Anywho, happy 5th, iPod.
