Filed under: Art, Light & Illuminated Objects, Links, Sports & Related Gear — roclar @ 7:50 am
OG Tioga BMX disc base, Manitou Axel lamp A few years after getting the idea of building a lamp from a worn out suspension fork, the founder/designer/sole employee of Treeline Design was finally convinced to sells his unique lamps online. Made from old bike barks and a few parts from his local hardware store, these lamps allow parts of the bike to live well past their prime. At present, there are three lamps available based off Manitou suspensions for $140 or $200.

Business Card Menger Sponge

Dr. Jeannine Moseley Business Card Menger Sponge To complete today’s cube trifecta we have the Business Card Menger Sponge. In 1995, Dr. Jeannine Mosely, a software engineer, set out to create a level/depth three Menger Sponge which is the first 3D fractal that mathematicians became aware of. The resulting structure was built from 66,048 business cards folded into 8,000 interlinked sub-cubes. The sponge is 54″ cubed, weighs about 150 lbs. and took nine years to build “involving hundreds of folders all over America.”

wax headshot victim Petroc Dragon Sesti in collaboration with the British military created a human head and torso in hard wax, heated them to body temperature and then fired a 20mm round through them both. The result is quite disfigured. Riflemaker Contemporary Art has more information on these pieces and Succession another one of his works with a 20mm.

walkmen gone wild This is funny in a sort of b-grade horror movie sort of way. Its basically a few minutes of a walkman playing a scream-track while sliding on a zipline caught on tape.

Reused Tire Sculptures

Not sure who created these (the best guess from the Fark thread was Chakaia Booker), but the sculptures look cool and provide a non-landfill location for the tires.

floofy bunnykins in a latte I would have never guessed that latte’s could look so good. The linked site even has a latte art guide. It would seem these images are courtesy of pouring countless drinks every day.

Bamiyan Laser Project In 2001 the Taliban ordered the destruction of the 16 centuries old Buddha statues that were carved into the cliffs overlooking Bamiyan Afghanistan (images of the Buddhas pre-destruction can be found here). Japanese artist Hiro Yamagata is working to recreate the Buddhas with lasers and renewable energy.
