Akamai Visualizing the Internets

Filed under: Computer Related, Links — roclar @ 6:00 pm
Akamai Visualizing the Internet Delivering 20% of the world’s internet traffic gives Akamai a unique perspective on the intertubes. They have a page with various graphs that show various metrics on the internet as a whole such as number of attacks, latency, and overall traffic. I am not entirely sure how I could actually use this data, but the graphs are well done and watching the numbers and the colors change can be somewhat entertaining.

ErgoMedia 500 Gaming Pad

Filed under: Computer Related, Games & Related Links, USB — roclar @ 7:55 am
ErgoMedia 500 Gaming Pad I haven’t played a PC game since August, yet for some reason gaming pads continue to intrigue me even though I never managed to make one work for me. The latest foray into this market is the ErgoMedia 500 Gaming Pad which features ergonomics, macro abilities as well as back lit keys for low-light situations. The ErgoMedia 500 Gaming Pad is available directly from the manufacturer for $43 or you can pick it up from NewEgg.com for $35.

Stuffed Computers

Filed under: Computer Related, Links, Pets & Animals — roclar @ 7:55 am
CompuBeaver Its been about a month for the Cat Skins to sink in, time for more taxidermy this time for a couple computer cases. First up with have a family dog turned PC. When the Zimmerman family dog Dieter died, they had him stuffed and he sat in the living room for four years. They then decided that in order to make better use of space that they would combine Dieter and their home computer. The other case mod pictured to the left and linked below is simply entitled “CompuBeaver” whose creator, Kasey McMahon, ordered a stuffed beaver and turned it into a case. I cannot say that I have ever considered housing a computer in a stuffed animal, so I have to give these creators creativity points. But I cannot imagine having one of these guys staring at me why I was working or playing on the computer housed inside of them without being seriously creepied out.

Finger Mouse

Filed under: Computer Related, Links, USB — roclar @ 8:00 am
Finger Mouse The Finger Mouse attempts to get past the constant swapping back and forth from keyboard to mouse in a simpler fashion then the orbiTouch Keyboard. Just use the Velcro strap and attach the mouse to the index finger on your right hand (there doesn’t appear to be a lefty version) and when you need to move the mouse, just point your finger down at any surface and start moving. The TechEBlog write-up also includes a link to a video of the Finger Mouse in use. The mouse features dual-buttons and a scroll wheel and 800dpi resolution. You can get the Finger Mouse for $35 from Brando or you can get a Logicsys branded one from Xoxide for $20.

USB Hub Tape Dispenser

Filed under: Computer Related, Links, USB — roclar @ 8:00 am
USB Hub Tape Dispenser Its been a couple of weeks since I posted my last USB hub integrated into an office product, so here we have the USB Hub Tape Dispenser. This four port USB hub has one port in the front for easy plugging and three in the rear that swivel 180 degrees to fit larger devices as well as what looks like a mini-USB B connector for connecting the hub to your machine. This USB hub is bus-powered only, so no high power devices. It comes in two sizes with the larger one having the dimensions of 171 x 87 x 47.5mm and weighing 790g and the smaller measuring 130 x 65.5 x 42mm and weighing 470g. The USB Hub Tape Dispenser hasn’t made it across the Pacific to Thanko’s US Rare Mono Shop, but you can get the large model in .jp for $24 and the small one for $21.

USB Speed Typing Mouse

Filed under: Computer Related, Links, USB — roclar @ 7:55 am
USB Speed Typing Mouse Created by Fifty Concepts, the USB Speed Typing Mouse is quite an odd USB contraption. The faster you type, the faster the little rodent pedals on his exercise bike. Below the bike, your current words per minute (WPM) count is displayed down to the first decimal place. It comes with software which keeps track of your total words typed per day as well as your top ten daily word counts. Not too many other details as Fifty Concepts has its product page in its VIP section that I am too lazy to get a login to get in, but the TechEBlog post linked below has a video of this little guy in action. The USB Speed Typing Mouse will be available from Drinkstuff in the UK for $40 on May 2nd.

Pill Shape USB Flash Drive

Filed under: Computer Related, Links, USB — roclar @ 7:50 am
Pill Shape USB Flash Drive USB flash drives themselves aren’t especially “fun” devices, they are more utilitarian in nature. So it always perks my curiosity when a USB flash drive is revealed in a new shape. The Pill Shape USB Flash Drive from Vavolo certainly fits the bill. This 2″ x 0.8″ x 0.8″ round shape drive comes with a key ring loop and I imagine probably would roll a lot if unattached. Of course the only flash drives I actually own are a first generation 1GB iPod Shuffle and a 512MB Lexar Lightning so even though the fun shapes amuse me, I end up buying relatively mundane looking devices. The Pill Shape USB Flash Drive is available for $70 or you can get the same shape in a 1GB model for $28.

Kinesis Freestyle

Filed under: Computer Related, Links, USB — roclar @ 8:00 am
Kinesis Freestyle keyoard with incline accessory I have always admired the original Kinesis keyboards now referred to as their Family of Contoured Keyboards. They always looked really comfortable to type on all day and they even had foot pedals. Even though some of the earlier adopters of these keyboards had software issues (which I expect have long been rectified by now) I always wanted one but couldn’t ever justify the $300+ price tag. Apparently at some point Kinesis released their Maxim line but just looking at them, I think my Microsoft Naturals are superior and much cheaper. Kinesis’s Freestyle line looks a bit more noteworthy however. The base keyboard halves are only attached by a single wire allowing the keyboard to merely rest on the desk yet still be split, transformed into a more traditional split keyboard with the incline accessory or to be further split with the VIP accessory. Still this keyboard is also somewhat pricey with the base keyboard costing $99 and both of the accessories going for $40 a piece. They are all available for pre-order now with shipping beginning the week of April 23.

Unotron Washable Keyboards

Filed under: Computer Related, Links, USB — roclar @ 7:55 am
Unotron Washable Keyboards Previously I posted links to instructions on how to wash your keyboard in the dishwasher. And why? Because keyboards get very disgusting and are a good place to harbor germs and other nasty things. So it really saddens me that Unotron’s line of SpillSeal keyboards does not come in an ergonomic model. Rather then have to go through a long ordeal to clean your input device, you can simply wash Unotron’s keyboards like a dish in the sink and plug it right back in if you so desire making its cleaning process a breeze. What’s more, the SpillSeal also protects it from accidental spills which has fried at least one of my keyboards in my life. The wired Unotron keyboards are available now for $46 or $50 for the ones with the multimedia keys while the wireless version with multimedia keys costs $80.

Thirteen “Different” Keyboards

Filed under: Computer Related, Links, USB — roclar @ 7:50 am
orbiTouch Keyless Ergonomic Keyboard Hongkiat.com has an entry entitled “13 Computer keyboards you’ve never seen before” and I admit they are definitely not the standard Dell keyboard. Still I have seen at least ten of the listed keyboards or close approximations and even posted a more exotic roll-up keyboard in the BendiBoard. Still it remains an interesting list of some peculiar input devices. Pictured is the orbiTouch Keyless Keyboard which creates keystrokes as you slide the two “domes” in their eight respective positions. Mouse functionality is built-in so your hands never have to leave the domes. The orbiTouch Keyless Ergonomic Keyboard is available directly from Blue Orb or Amazon.com for $399.
