Still Alive

Yep, I’m still around. I haven’t really done anything earth-shattering in the past eight months but I am generally happy with my normal routine. Activities include, roughly in order of time: sleeping, working, eating, TV/movie/fiddling on the iMac time, playing the 360, and playing Magic. Its the busy season at work, but things have been going well. The college is less then 40 days away from launching its new web site and as its been noted, I am involved. Not a whole lot on TV that I watch except the Daily Show and Colbert Report. I have been subscribed to Netflix for a month or so and have been enjoying that. I recently finished Mass Effect on the 360 and my gamerscore crossed 10,000 for what little thats worth. Thats about it for day to day stuff. Below the break I have a few other tidbits I want to mention. I don’t know how frequently I will post, but I should be able to update more then twice a year.

Spring Cleaning Layout Changes

I decided it was time to streamline the sidebars a bit. On the left hand side I have collapsed the categories and archives into drop down menus since I think I am pretty much the only person that uses them anyway and that definitely cuts their space utilization. I removed some of the other links on the left hand side and the ones I thought folks cared about have migrated to the Other Pages which is now linked there. I then had plenty of room to add a “recent comments” section loosely modeled after the one on DrFaulken’s site. On the right hand side, I have taken the feathers down since that battle is over. Since the national terror alert has pretty much remained unchanged for the past few years, I have removed those images as well. The rest has been trimmed up a bit and centered. I have screen captures of both before and after views of the site. Feel free to critique. I still am not 100% happy with it and am open to further suggestions. Special thanks to DrFaulken for reviewing the interim phases.

Lets See If I Can Get This Thing Started Again

This site has always tappered down a bit around the holidays, and the end of last year was no exception. Coming off of the holidays, most of my normal sites were focused on Macworld 2007 and CES. While both of these shows are interesting, they both focus on products that have not been released and in some cases never will. Work then got kind of crazy preparing for the Daylight Savings Date change courtesy of the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Thanks to 109th, I got the opportunity to patch systems at least six weekends straight at a variety of fun hours in the evening/morning. While I do enjoy the extra daylight hour in the evening, I wish legislators would spend more time considering potential drawbacks of changes such as this. Anyway, I have been collecting topics over the past few months. Expect some of these older topics interspersed among the new for a while at least. I also have a Wii now, so there will probably be more posts related to that as well.

Great Firewall of China

China’s firewall has been well documented throughout the history of the internet. greatfirewallofchina.org has come up with a test to see if a site is currently blocked by the .cn firewall. So what could be more fun then seeing if a site thats been dormant for three months and makes a point of not discussing politics is blocked? (yes, I know…lots of things…work with me, people, mmk?) The answer is of course China’s firewall doesn’t bother blocking roclar.net. Ah well. Maybe one of the two people still reading will have better luck.

Connection Trouble and Short Break

roclar.net’s ISP is having a couple network connectivity issues. The first is that there is insufficient bandwith upstream between said ISP and the internet causing extrodinary latency. The second is as of 2PM today, a routing issue cropped up causing certain portions of the internet to be inaccessible including my ability to connect to here from home. There is no firm ETA for either solution. As I do all my updates from home and I am going on a conference next week there probably won’t be any updates until roughly Monday, December 11. Hopefully the internet woes will be resolved by then.

Web Timer

I got tired of using the date command to keep track of how long my tea had been brewing and decided to look for web based timer solutions. The Mothership directed me to a javascript timer on James A. White’s site that was available for download. Score! I converted the javascript and html code into my preferred XHTML 1.0 Strict and changed the digits from the orignal thick black to a green digital font. If you have timer needs and are in front of a computer feel free to call this up.

Sever Maintenance Today

roclar.net Lives Again…Maybe

After an extremely busy summer at the office, I think I am ready to continue posting on my mediocre corner of the internets for the three to five people who actually care. I have a backlog of stuff that I have been meaning to post and I’d also like to continue posting on some of the topics already mentioned here earlier. Plus I am tired of looking at the bottle openers post when I check the ISC Alerts and the web comics listed on the Random Links page.

Joker.com DDoS

The roclar.net domain name is hosted by Joker.com. They have been the target of denial of service attacks over the past week which resulted in some users being unable to reach this site. While this is going on, roclar.net may appear to be unavailable. Hopefully Joker.com manages to get a few different name servers on different pipes.
