Survival Straps

Filed under: GIMPs, Links — roclar @ 6:00 pm
Survival Strap bracelet in neon orange and blue Survival Straps makes a variety of different products out of wound 550 pound paracord including bracelets, watch straps, dog collars, and even rifle slings. In a pinch, the bracelets can be unwound for eight feet of paracord if you order the full cord version. Most of the products can come in either solid or two of the thirty or so colors. The bracelets and anklets are available directly from the Survival Straps web site from $15 to $19. I might be interested when the paracord belts become available.

Nightlighter Flashlight

Filed under: GIMPs, Light & Illuminated Objects, Links — roclar @ 6:00 pm
Nightlighter Flashlight The Nightlighter flashlight is designed to allow you to see where you are and where you are going. Being the klutz that I am I have found having a light source pointed at either the destination or my feet generally results in me either tripping over something or running into a wall. The Nightlighter uses two 5mm LEDs for illuminating the ground around you and a one watt “high output” LED for illuminating forward and is powered by three AA batteries which are included. The Nightlighter is available from First Street for $30.

SteriPEN

Filed under: GIMPs, Links, Sports & Related Gear, Water & Ice — roclar @ 6:00 pm
SteriPEN The SteriPEN uses UV light to disinfect drinking water by destroy viruses, bacteria and protozoa. If the SteriPEN works as advertised, it could prove itself useful in a wide variety of situations where reliably clean drinking water isn’t available including hiking or traveling abroad to places with suspect water. There are two reviews of the SteriPEN Classic on BackpackGearTest.org that give relatively positive remarks about the product here and here. Pictured to the left is the SteriPEN Adventurer which is designed with backpacking in mind. It measures a little over six inches in length and is powered by two CR123 batteries (included). The SteriPEN line ranges $99 to $130 in price and can be found from a wide variety of etailers including Amazon.

Solar Powered Lighter

Filed under: Beer & Booze, GIMPs, Links — roclar @ 7:50 am
Solar Powered Lighter The Solar Powered Lighter provides the curious combination of a lighter and a bottle opener in one brightly colored package. The lighter function can be charged by any form of light be it from the sun or an artificial source and produces a “continuous series of sparks” not a steady flame. The support base doubles as a bottle opener as well as being able to unscrew twist caps. The Solar Powered Lighter is available in .pt for a little under $19. Other non fuel related solutions include the Solar Spark Lighter from Sundance Solar that focuses sunlight onto a focal point using a stainless steel parabolic mirror and sells for $15. Or you could go with the Spark-Lite (reviewed by Drfaulken) for $9.

StrikeAlert Personal Lightning Detector

Filed under: GIMPs, Links, Weather — roclar @ 7:50 am
StrikeAlert Personal Lightning Detector The Strike Alert Personal Lightning Detector is designed to detect lightning strikes up to forty miles away and give you a rough estimate how close the strikes are. The device breaks up the forty miles into the following ranges, 24-40, 12-24, 6-12 and 0-6. When a strike is detected the device will light up the appropriate range for two minutes or until a closer strike is detected allowing you to track the storm visually. You can also turn the device to the “on with tone” setting and track a storm with the devices audible tones. I’d be curious to know how accurate devices such as these are and I was unable to find a review to indicate how well it worked. The StrikeAlert Personal Lightning Detector is available on sale from Ambient Weather for $61.

Anti-Static Keychain

Filed under: GIMPs, Hello Kitty, Links, Weather — roclar @ 8:00 am
Anti-Static Keychain It never fails. Once the temperature drops below roughly 50 degrees, my truck starts attacking me. Should I dare touch unclothed skin to the body of the truck, I am in for quite a shocking experience. As there are many other “victims” of static electricity out there, numerous solutions have been introduced. Pictured and linked below is the Antistatic KeyChain from appropriately named StopZap that has a light bulb that lights up when it receives the static charge and the object is clear to touch. It is available directly from StopZap for $10. Brando’s car section has a variety of key chains that serve the same purpose including one that features Hello Kitty that sells for $14 and doesn’t even include an all clear light.

Buck Metro LED Knife

Filed under: GIMPs, Light & Illuminated Objects, Links — roclar @ 7:55 am
Buck Metro LED Knife I can imagine a staff meeting at Buck where they are talking about a new knife and somebody breaks out their Photon Micro Light and looks to see if there is room. The Buck Metro LED Knife has a 1.25″ “drop point” blade enclosed in a 2.375″ enclosure. The enclosure also houses a single 5mm LED with an on/off switch which is powered by two CR-1616 batteries which are included. The Buck Metro LED Knife is available in the “smoke” color from Think Geek for $25 or you can get it on sale from Knives Plus and choose between blue, forest green, red or smoke handles for $18. Ten Day Survival Pack

Filed under: GIMPs, Links — roclar @ 9:54 pm
10 day survival pack My good friend DrFaulken has spent a good amount of time making sure he is moderately prepared in the event that Something Bad Happens™. He has even organized a small group aptly titled Geeks in Moderate Preparedness or GIMPs for short. I haven’t been able to prepare myself nearly as well as he, but I do keep an eye out for articles on the topic. Enter this ten day survival pack suggestiong by Jeffrey Yaga. He has prepared a six-pack cooler filled with food and other supplies that can be found in a grocery for about $25 that should cover most of you needs should you be stranded while driving. Just add water. I feel pretty confident that I wouldn’t need something like this where I drive around Williamsburg, but even traveling up and down Rt. 5 can be pretty lonely at times.
