Bear Claw Scoops

Filed under: Links, Weather — roclar @ 5:50 pm
Bear Claw Scoops Living on old farm land does have some perks most notably a distinct lack of large trees producing lots of leaves to deal with. So I see a product entitled Bear Claw Scoops and I think it clearly has to be something cool. However it seems that lots of vendors have come up with the idea that people picking up leaves need bigger hands. Whatever, none had a cooler sounding name. A pair of Bear Claw Scoops are available from Plow & Hearth for $10.

Lightning Hits Tree

Filed under: Destruction, Links, Weather — roclar @ 5:40 pm
Lightning Hits Tree I thought this was a pretty good photograph of lightning hitting a tree captured precisely at the time of impact taken by Flickr user aixcracker. He has a few other lightning shots that are also pretty good.

Fibre Optic Twilight Umbrellas

Filed under: Links, Water & Ice, Weather — roclar @ 7:55 am
Spectrum Starlight Umbrella Designed by Dzine, the Fibre Optic Twilight Umbrellas endeavor to brighten an otherwise stormy and dreary day. The first of this pair of umbrellas is the Starlight Umbrella which utilizes blue fibre optics that can be set to twinkling or statically on or off. The other, linked below, is the Spectrum Starlight Umbrella which only can be set to phase through the colors or have the fibre optics turned off. Both umbrellas require three AAA batteries that are not included. Both umbrellas are available for about $41 from either iWantOneOfThose or Crazy About Gadgets in .uk.

StrikeAlert Personal Lightning Detector

Filed under: GIMPs, Links, Weather — roclar @ 7:50 am
StrikeAlert Personal Lightning Detector The Strike Alert Personal Lightning Detector is designed to detect lightning strikes up to forty miles away and give you a rough estimate how close the strikes are. The device breaks up the forty miles into the following ranges, 24-40, 12-24, 6-12 and 0-6. When a strike is detected the device will light up the appropriate range for two minutes or until a closer strike is detected allowing you to track the storm visually. You can also turn the device to the “on with tone” setting and track a storm with the devices audible tones. I’d be curious to know how accurate devices such as these are and I was unable to find a review to indicate how well it worked. The StrikeAlert Personal Lightning Detector is available on sale from Ambient Weather for $61.

Anti-Static Keychain

Filed under: GIMPs, Hello Kitty, Links, Weather — roclar @ 8:00 am
Anti-Static Keychain It never fails. Once the temperature drops below roughly 50 degrees, my truck starts attacking me. Should I dare touch unclothed skin to the body of the truck, I am in for quite a shocking experience. As there are many other “victims” of static electricity out there, numerous solutions have been introduced. Pictured and linked below is the Antistatic KeyChain from appropriately named StopZap that has a light bulb that lights up when it receives the static charge and the object is clear to touch. It is available directly from StopZap for $10. Brando’s car section has a variety of key chains that serve the same purpose including one that features Hello Kitty that sells for $14 and doesn’t even include an all clear light.

Light Saber Umbrella

Filed under: Light & Illuminated Objects, Links, Water & Ice, Weather — roclar @ 8:00 am
Light Saber Umbrella Rather then get an relatively mundane umbrella with a light saber handle, why not get an umbrella with a mundane handle and an illuminated shaft? Given that the product page for the Light Saber Umbrella is in Korean embeded in images that Google cannot translate, there is only so much information I can glean, but there are plenty of pretty pictures. The umbrella measures 84 cm (33″) or 94cm (37″) if you count the handle and there is also a smaller kid size. The umbrella comes in the three colors pictured, red umbrella/shaft, blue umbrella shaft and black umbrella/white shaft and is lit by three LEDs. The Light Saber Umbrella is available in at least Korea for $42.

Darth Vader’s Lightsaber Umbrella

Filed under: Links, Star Wars, Water & Ice, Weather — roclar @ 7:55 am
Star Wars Style A Darth Vader Lightsaber Umbrella Speaking of more expensive yet simpler umbrellas, we have the Darth Vader’s Lightsaber Umbrella. Supposedly made available by Master Replicas though their site has no mention of the product, this umbrella features an “authentic” light saber handle and a red nylon sleeve so it looks like a “real” light saber when not in use. The Darth Vader’s Lightsaber Umbrella is available “in limited quanties” in two styles which have different artwork on the umbrella. Style A has artwork of Darth Vader amidst rivers of burning lava and style B has art of Darth Vader preparing for battle. You can either get this umbrella and its fancy handle directly from Entertainment Earth or their Amazon store for $99.

Umbrella Draining Solution

Filed under: Links, Water & Ice, Weather — roclar @ 7:50 am
Car Umbrella Drainer The Umbrella Draining Solution (UDS) is Nissan S. Engineering’s answer to where to put wet umbrellas in confined spaces. What the product boils down to is a compact umbrella and a big metal cup with (hopefully) a water proof lining to store the wet or dry umbrella in. The UDS and matching umbrellas are available in five metallic colors: gold, pink, red, purple and silver. You can buy these directly from the manufacturer at the link below for $15 or you can get them from Get Organized! on sale for $10 and supposedly they are available at Walgreens in Florida as well. Pretty simple idea, but I know I have spent more money on simplier umbrellas.

Ice Dozer Recap

Filed under: Content, Reviews, Water & Ice, Weather — roclar @ 7:50 am
Ice Dozer Left View I originally bought the Ice Dozer shortly after I posted it with the full intention of reviewing it. Over the past two winters we have certainly had some frosty days, but no real ice storm that has required the full ice removal power the Ice Dozer is reported to deliver. Since we have had a couple of days with temperatures in excess of 80 degrees, I am guessing the ice threat is gone until next winter so I might as well post whatever I have. First here are some additional shots of the scraper that I took whil it was still in its packaging: left view, right view, front view, and top view. Innovation Factory (the creator of the Ice Dozer) has a good instruction page and I have a local copy of the Ice Dozer Manual. My observations after the break.

Saturn’s Stormy South

Filed under: Links, Space & Celestial Objects, Weather — roclar @ 8:00 am
Cassini Orbiter visual mapping spectrometer 20061011 NASA’s Cassini spacecraft observed the first hurricane-like storm with a well-developed eye that has been seen on another planet. The storm is approximately 8,000 km (5,000 miles) in diameter or 2/3s the diameter of Earth. A three hour observation session noted that the winds were blowing around Saturn’s south pole at 550 km or 350 miles per hour. For contrast, the largest tropical cyclone on record is Typhoon Tip which was recorded as being 2,170 km (1,350 miles) wide and shares the tropical cyclone wind speed record with Typhoon Keith, Hurricane Camille and Hurricane Allen with maximum sustained winds of 305 km/h (190 mph). The largest wind gust on record for Earth is claimed by the Mount Washington observatory in New Hampshire with winds clocked in at 231 mph on April 10, 1934. Saturn’s storm is about a quarter of the size of the great red spot of Jupiter though.
