Orange and Maroon Day

Filed under: Content, Links, William & Mary — roclar @ 9:47 pm
Virginia Tech ribbon It was interesting walking around the campus of William & Mary today. There was enough orange and maroon to remind me of being in Blacksburg on game day years ago albeit surrounded by red brick and a conspicuous absence of hills. I attended William & Mary’s Virginia Tech Memorial Event which was opened and closed with the Wren bell tolling 33 times, once for each life lost in the shootings. The New York Times posted an article Victims of Shooting Are Remembered (digg Referer) and I have to agree with President Nichol’s opening statement: “So many tolls.”

Millington Cross Decision

Filed under: Links, William & Mary — roclar @ 7:33 pm
the Millington Cross on display on the Wren Chapel alter It is interesting how much discussion can be stirred up by a small, brass religious icon. Towards the end of October, President Nichol sent an email to the campus noting a change in policy displaying the cross. Instead of leaving it on display unless a event coordinator wanted it removed, it would be displayed only at the request of the event coordinator. Before this email, I was unaware the Wren Chapel even had a cross even though I have been there four or five times that I can remember off hand, so I have enjoyed learning more about it’s history. The debate has generated some interesting opinion pieces and caused a couple of allumi to setup an online petition to save the cross I guess from the closet. At least this is a mostly internal affair free of an external governing body coming down on us.

Abandoned & Little-Known Airfields

Filed under: Air Vehicles, Links, William & Mary — roclar @ 8:00 am
William and Mary Airport Flight Map Abandoned & Little-Known Airfields is a site that covers information on 1,368 airfields across the United States that have vanished or been abandoned. Of particular note for me are the abandoned airports near me in the Virginia Hampton area. At one point, Williamsburg had two operational airports, Williamsburg Airport / Scott Field which opened in 1931 and closed some time in 1952 and College Airport / William & Mary Airport / Central Airport which also opened in 1931 and stayed open until 1962. The site also noted that the “College of William & Mary was the first college in America to offer flying lessons in its regular course catalog.” The Williamsburg area still has an active albeit small airport, the Williamsburg Jamestown Airport (JGG) which opened in 1970, but I have only been their to eat at the restaurant on site, Charly’s Airport Restaurant.

William & Mary Will Be Dropping the Feathers

Filed under: Links, William & Mary — roclar @ 6:00 pm
The College of William & Mary's Logo as per the NCAA It seems the feather-fight such that it was is now over. President Nichol wrote a letter to the community today announcing that the college would have a new logo by Fall 2007. Nichol’s primary reasons for moving on were to 1) not punish current W&M athletes from “competing at the highest level, 2) that the college needs to focus on more important issues “such as assuring access to students, supporting faculty research and classroom instruction, and providing the campus with state-of-the-art facilities” and 3) concern over the college’s reputation “I am unwilling to allow it to become the symbol and lodestar for a prolonged struggle over Native American imagery that will likely be miscast and misunderstood — to the detriment of the institution.” While I do not disagree with the president on any particular point, I would like to see something done about how far the NCAA has moved away from what its primary mission should be.

Zable’s New Field Complete

Filed under: Links, Sports & Related Gear, William & Mary — roclar @ 6:33 am
Zables new field, goal posts and surrounding track

As I previously mentioned here the college upgrade of the field at Zable Stadium was completed on July 11. Below are links to the gallery of pictures of the field and the new goal posts. The athletics department also enhanced the seating chart for the stadium they released earlier this year and added the Zable Stadium Seating View Map where you can click in the general area of your seats and see your view of the field for even more picture goodness.

Football facility enhancements continue as the ground breaking ceremony for the Jimmye Laycock Football Center which will be located right behind the stadium took place September 15. Here are twopages from the Maine vs. William & Mary program with a recap of all the facility upgrade details.

William & Mary’s NCAA Logo Appeal

Filed under: Links, William & Mary — roclar @ 1:01 pm
The College of William & Mary's Logo as per the NCAA Yesterday, The College of William & Mary submitted its appeal of the NCAA’s decision with respect to our feather logo. Much to my delight, president Nichol’s cover leter is particularly scathing of the committee’s decision. I hope the NCAA comes to their senses on this particular issue.

Zable’s New Field Update

Filed under: Content, Links, Sports & Related Gear, William & Mary — roclar @ 6:39 am
and the rock is down and smooshed As previously posted here, The College of William & Mary’s Zable Stadium is getting Field Turf installed this summer. I had trouble finding information on the installation process. The only information I found on the Field Turf site was at the end of this article. Though I did find some more general information on Field Turf. This installation description by Heavenly Greens was the best I have found so far. Installation for a field seems more complex then a putting green. I am still not sure what the purpose was for the big rolls of black stuff seen in my last post. It would appear that the Zable installation is nearing the end of the “geotextile weed block” phase.

William & Mary’s NCAA Review

Filed under: Links, William & Mary — roclar @ 1:06 pm
The College of William & Mary's Logo as per the NCAA Florida State with Chief Osceola riding a horse with a feathered spear, Seminole logo and helmet with spear and feather were all cleared by the NCAA last August. Yet the same board deemed that while the nickname “Tribe” was ok, that the feathers in the logo of The College of William & Mary were a “stereotypical reference to Native Americans.”

Zable Stadium’s New Field

Filed under: Content, Links, Sports & Related Gear, William & Mary — roclar @ 6:49 pm
Zable under the backhoe Since 1935, Zable Stadium as it has been known as since 1990 has served as the football stadium for The College of William & Mary. After the first night game ever at Zable stadium when ESPN had to bring their own temporary lights to allow for the game to take place, last year the college received gifts totalling $650,000 for new, permanent lights for the stadium (thank you!).

William and Mary’s Inauguration & Investiture of Its President and Chancellor

Filed under: Content, William & Mary — roclar @ 9:21 pm
Lord Botetourt with balloons So for those of you who didn’t know and have not figured it out yet, I work for The College of William & Mary (Wikipedia entry for the college). This past Friday, the college celebrated the Investiture of the self-proclaimed cowgirl from Arizona, Sandra Day O’Connor, as Chancellor and the Inaguration of Gene R. Nichol (”Big Nick” to the student body) as President (heretofore referred to as the I & I for the sake of brevity). Only essential personnel were required to work (I am only essential if something I take care of is broken or I need to break it) and classes were canceled until 1PM so that faculty, staff and students could attend the event. So I donned my suit and headed to campus Friday morning.
